This rigorous academic background laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors, providing him with critical thinking skills and a deep appreciation for the nuances of language and culture.

     

    Roman Sabbatical

    As part of his university curriculum, Toby ventured to Rome, where he immersed himself in the rich tapestry of Italian culture at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre. He enriched his knowledge by studying the history of cinema and art, pivotal subjects that would later influence his professional path. During this time, he also contributed to the academic community as a teaching assistant in the English department. His directorial debut in the university theater scene came with a well-received production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, which he managed alongside a team of enthusiastic Italian students.

     

    Career Beginnings in London

    Upon completing his education, Toby returned to London and soon carved out a niche in the film industry. His career began at Studio 8 Productions and Peace Arch Films, where he engaged in script coverage and analysis, providing critical insights that helped shape film narratives. His role also extended to logistical coordination, managing travel, and ADR sessions for talent involved in international productions. Additionally, he gained invaluable hands-on experience in post-production while interning on the BBC's long-standing series Monarch of the Glen, learning the intricacies of film editing, sound mixing, and color correction.

     

    Professional Development in Tuscany

    2004 marked a significant year for Toby as he delved into physical production with the feature film Shadows in the Sun. Filming in the picturesque settings of Tuscany and London, he took on multiple roles that ranged from producer's assistant to translator, bridging the communication gap between the Italian crew and English-speaking team members. His adaptability and keen eye for detail also saw him stepping in as an on-screen double for the lead actor, demonstrating his willingness to embrace diverse aspects of film production.

     

    Move to Los Angeles and Expansion into Literary Management

    Later, in 2004, Edward Wagstaff relocated to Los Angeles, taking a strategic position as a Creative Executive at Fierce Entertainment. In this role, he was integral to developing the company's first major in-house project, War, featuring Jet Li and Jason Statham. His efforts not only facilitated the successful rollout of the film but also significantly expanded the firm's clientele, tripling the buyers' rep operation within seven months. Toby transitioned to Original Content, a boutique literary management agency, seeking to merge his passion for writing with his professional life. Here, he focused on identifying and nurturing new screenwriting talent, doubling the agency's active client roster.

     

    Transition to Full-Time Screenwriting

    Over time, Toby's passion for writing could no longer be sidelined. He transitioned to full-time screenwriting after successfully optioning his first spec script, Arena, to Summit Entertainment in 2008. This breakthrough set the stage for a decade of scripting, pitching, and selling original screenplays across various genres. His portfolio expanded to include projects like The Day I Die, a contemporary thriller optioned by Millennium Films; Break My Bones, a YA drama commissioned by Warhorse Films; and Powerhouse, a UK-based drama/thriller sold as a pitch to Lightbulb Pictures.

     

    Contributions to Conversational AI

    The landscape of writing shifted with the 2023 Writers' Guild of America strike, prompting Toby to explore the potential of conversational AI. He joined a large tech company, applying his expertise to writing and editing tasks for AI models. Despite his involvement in technology, he remains convinced of the unique value of human creativity in writing, viewing AI as a tool to enhance the accessibility of factual information and support global challenges like climate change.

     

    Personal Life and Hobbies

    Beyond the professional realm, Toby maintains a vibrant personal life filled with diverse interests. He is an accomplished musician, skilled in guitar and bass, with a history of performing in various bands. His youthful prowess in fencing earned him a top-ten national ranking in the UK, and he continues to enjoy this sport alongside his academic commitments. Photography remains a beloved hobby, and he often finds himself exploring natural and urban landscapes with his 35mm SLR camera.
